Small-scale pig keeping: why inbreeding matters. For most breeders, genetic diversity is the key to producing healthy litters and robust examples of future breeding stock. This isn’t simple when the genetic pool to pick from is small, but it is important to get it right. William E. Castle working with Drosophila, Sewell Wright with guinea pigs, and S. Hatai and Helen Dean King with rats provided early examples of the new scientific breeding of animal forms (Castle et al., ; Wright, ; King, ). ORIGINS OF COMMON INBRED STRAINS.

Wright made two important applications of inbreeding theory while he was at the USDA. The first was experimental. He inherited a colony of guinea pigs that had been maintained, usually with close inbreeding, for many generations. He analyzed the effects of inbreeding on a variety of important traits, such as size, vigor, and fertility.   Inbreeding of both the pigs and the dam have a substantial negative effect on litter size, pig weight and growth to days. The inbreeding of the boar had little effect on litter size or pig weight in these studies.

A crossbreed is an organism with purebred parents of two different breeds, varieties, or populations. Crossbreeding, sometimes called "designer crossbreeding", is the process of breeding such an organism, often with the intention to create offspring that share the traits of both parent lineages, or producing an organism with hybrid crossbreeding is used to maintain health and. Take the skinny pig as a prime example of a breed that has been inbred repeatedly within the last 20 years or so (hamsters aren't a particularly good example of current inbreeding since it is nearly 80 years since the first litter were bred).

The Biology of the Guinea Pig focuses on the use of the guinea pig as a substrate in research. This book provides a comprehensive coverage of material related to applied care and management of guinea pigs and their diseases.

Hello everyone, Okay, I mentioned elsewhere that I would be mentioning my situation, questions and concerns I had about my two guinea pigs breeding. I am new here but it didn't take me very long to notice the *very* strong feelings against breeding.

I'm in a messy situation here, and I'm going to take the risk and stick my neck out here because I really love those two guinea pigs, and I.

Hi everyone. A few years ago, I adopted a piggy (later named Mama Pig) who was abandoned in someone's apartment and pregnant with what I think was a badly inbred baby. She gave birth to baby Josephine a few months after I got her. Josephine was a lovely little piggy. She just seemed a.

Guinea pigs normally have only 3 toes on the hind feet. This is the con- dition in all of the wild species of the family Caviidae. Atavistic return of the little toe is not, however, especially uncommon.

decline in vigor: II. differentiation among inbred families /. If there are negative genes then they would be far more likely to be expressed. In the wild guinea pigs almost always mate only with others in their own colony/family so inbreeding is common-BUT the individuals with the negative genes get weeded out very quickly-unlike those kept as pets.

If the negative genes are weeded out then inbreeding is.
